Locked Hearing Aids - What are they and why to avoid them

What are locked hearing aids?

If you own a pair of locked hearing aids, that means only the hearing care provider you purchased the hearing aids from can make programming changes, not a provider from a different clinic. Any other audiologist will not be able to program the hearing aids because their software is not compatible. However, if you own a pair of unlocked hearing aids, you can get programming adjustments from any audiologist. Even if you purchased your hearing aids in Oklahoma and you’re vacationing in Florida, if you have unlocked hearing aids, an audiologist will be able to make changes for you. From the wearer’s perspective, locked hearing aids act, sound, and function like unlocked hearing aids. This is because the same manufacturer that makes unlocked brand A also makes locked brand B. You can change the volume or your program settings in the same manner. However, if you want permanent changes made by your audiologist (which most hearing aid patients want) you have no choice but to return to the same provider you bought the hearing aids from.

If I own locked hearing aids, can I get them unlocked?

Sometimes. Occasionally the manufacturer of the locked hearing aid will unlock the hearing aids; however, this is rare. Once you purchase a pair of locked hearing aids, you often must return to the hearing aid provider you bought them from if you want permanent programming changes. To avoid running into this problem, ask your audiologist if your hearing aids will be locked or unlocked before purchasing anything. If your provider only sells locked devices, consider going somewhere else to buy hearing aids.
