How to Unclog Plugged Up Ears

Do you regularly struggle to control excessive earwax? Here are some steps you can take to deal with waxy ears.

Step 1: Soften the wax.
Hard, dry wax is difficult to remove. To soften stubborn earwax, you can purchase Debrox over the counter. Or, you can also use a dropper and baby oil or mineral oil.

To do this correctly, lie down on your side with the waxy ear facing the ceiling. Have a tissue or washcloth handy for the next part. Squeeze just two to three drops of baby oil or mineral oil into your ear. Still lying on your side, wait about 5 minutes for the oil or Debrox to work, then sit up and allow it to drain out of your ear into a tissue or washcloth. Repeat this process every night to help soften hard wax.

Step 2: Use warm water.

The easiest way to do this is in the shower. Stand under the running water so that it can flow directly into your ear canal. Wait a minute, and then turn your head and allow the water and wax to drain out of your ear.  Repeat this a few times. If your earwax is hard, this step won’t work, so you may need to repeat step 1 for about a week before noticing results.

Step 3: Don’t try and dig out your earwax.

Should steps 1 and 2 fail, attacking your ears with Q-tips may seem tempting. However, trying to dig out your own earwax can push it deeper into your ear canal, which could be painful and cause further issues. If you aren’t able to manage wax on your own, visit your audiologist. Dr. Magann Faivre can remove wax for you quickly.
