How Hearing Aids Should ALWAYS Be Fit! Real Ear Measurements

Fitting & Fine Tuning

Hearing aids are not one-size fits all. Just like eyeglasses, your hearing aids have a prescription. At your hearing aid fitting, your hearing aids will be adjusted to match your prescription and provide the right amount of volume and clarity for your hearing loss. At ASH Audiology, we use Real Ear Measurement, which helps confirm your hearing aids have been adjusted just right for your ears. Real Ear Measurement

Ears come in different shapes and sizes. Just like an opera house or theater has ‘acoustics,’ so do the inside of the ears. In order to account for the fact that everyone’s ears are shaped differently, we use a measurement called Real Ear that research proves is the best predictor for hearing aid success. To complete Real Ear Measurement, we place a flexible, soft, microphone inside your ear canal. Next, we place your hearing aid on your ear and you’ll listen to a recording. While you listen, the microphone in your ear measures exactly how much sound the hearing aid is putting into your ear. We use these measurements to ensure your hearing aid exactly matches your prescription.

Fine Tuning & Customization

After fitting your hearing aids to your prescription, you will be asked to describe what you think about the sound quality, clarity, and volume. Adjustments will be made based on your feedback to ensure you feel comfortable. If you’re worried they will be too loud, the volume can be gradually increased over several weeks or months to ease you into them. All of your concerns about volume, noise, sound quality, and clarity will be taken into account when your hearing aids are fit, so please don’t hesitate to tell your audiologist.
